National Portrait Gallery

Went here to see the official portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama but discovered many great exhibits and stayed far longer than we had anticipated. I love his portrait but, I’m not crazy about Michelle’s.  (I don’t think it captures anything of her grace, beauty & elegance). What do you think?

President Obama is in the Presidents Collection.  Michelle is in the Twentieth Century Americans.  Other collections included “The Public Works of Art Project” in FDR’s first term, “The Struggle for Justice” “Bravo” (groundbreakers in the arts) and  “I Dream a World – Selections from Brian Lanker’s Portraits of Remarkable Black Women”. If (when?) I come back to DC, I will definitely spend more time in this building. Some of my favorites from each of the collections:

Harlem Dancers by Margaret Brassler Kane, 1937; and Rosa Parks by Marshall Rumbaugh 1984

Portraits of  John Lewis and Mary McLeod Bethune in “The Struggle for Justice” Exhibit

Lena Horne and Dizzy Gillespie in “Bravo” exhibit

Actress Cicely Tyson and Singer Odetta from the Remarkable Black Women exhibit
