Borrowing from a statement in the Mothers of Gynecology brochure, I have found in Alabama a strange dichotomy as the state claims status both as the ‘Cradle of the Confederacy’ and the ‘Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement’. Certainly, in Montgomery there are plenty of historical markers of each. But, overall, I had a positive feeling for Montgomery, with the excellent Legacy Museum and it’s associated National Memorial for Peace & Justice, and the Civil Rights Memorial Center, created by The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) respectively.
