* According to DESE guidelines, educators may receive PDPs for attending a conference if both of the following criteria are met: (1) the conference spans two or more days, and allows for attendance at a series of sessions/workshops on the same or similar topic totaling 10 hours or more and (2) if attendance results in a final product that would serve as an assessment of learning, such as developing a school-based activity or curriculum, or publishing written material. (source: https://www.doe.mass.edu/pd/faq.html#A5) The Cape Cod Collaborative will provide certificates of participation for educators who have attended the entire conference, totaling 10.25 contact hours. It is up to individual participants to fulfill the second requirement, producing a final product serving as an assessment of their learning.

Twenty Cape Cod professionals of color and members of the Wampanoag tribe are offering to share their personal and professional expertise and experiences with Cape Cod educators in a virtual conference July 19th and 20th. The conference, “Educating All Children: Celebrating the Mosaic”, has been organized by the MLK Education Task Force of the Nauset Interfaith Association with the support of the Cape Cod chapter of the NAACP and the Cape Cod Collaborative. It is designed to help educators learn more about racism and anti-racism, equity and inclusion and specifically, how they can help build a safe and inclusive environment for all Cape children.

Two keynote speakers from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will open the conference with a discussion of the development of students’ capacity to care as well as their understanding of justice and their commitment to pursuing it. Other presentations will include sessions on “How to be an Effective Ally to BIPOC In & Out of the Classroom”, “The Impact of Racism on the Mental Health of Students”, “…Education of Wampanoag Youth”, and “Building an Anti-Racist Classroom”. The final session of the conference is a panel of speakers with representatives of various races & cultures speaking about their experiences as a person of color on Cape Cod.

Tara Vargas Wallace is a panelist for the conference’s discussion of multiculturalism on Cape Cod. She said “This conference is critical for educators, especially on the Cape where according to the census 96% are white, to better understand the experiences of their students of color and understand the ways in which racism can negatively impact a child and be better prepared as educators to actively support and advocate for students from underrepresented populations.”

There is no charge to attend the conference and educators can receive professional education credit (PDPs) through the Cape Cod Collaborative. People may register for the conference through the Collaborative website (www.capecodcollaborative.org) or by contacting one of the conference organizers to receive an email link to the registration site.
